U OF T DROPS REGULAR SEASON FINALE TO BROCK

The University of Toronto Varsity Blues women's rugby team dropped their regular season finale 75-7 to the visiting Brock Badgers on Saturday afternoon (Sept. 30) at Varsity Stadium.

Despite the loss, the Varsity Blues qualify for the OUA playoffs for the second consecutive season, finishing in fourth place in the OUA Russell division. Toronto will travel next week to challenge the Western Mustangs, who placed fifth in the Shields division. in the first round of the OUA playoffs.

The Brock Badgers offence was quick on the board in the regular season finale, utilizing big plays to break through a stout U of T defence. Toronto was able to control play in the middle of the field but long Badger runs resulted in two tries from Meagan Hart and single markers from Katelyn Heyens and Jenna Rainville in the first half.

Early second half action took a back-and-forth pace as the Badgers scored a try from Taylor Knezevich, but the Toronto offence awoke with a quick response.

Catching Brock off balance, Varsity Blues wing Julia Cicconi was the beneficiary of a well-placed pass, breaking through the Badgers defence to score for U of T.

Toronto would continue to pressure, frequently finding themselves within yards of another try, but the Badgers stood tall.

Brock would add seven more tries to close out the contest with markers from Lauren Wilkes,Taylor Hurd, Kelsey Smith, a second from Knezevich, and two more from Rainville.

Madison Sforza successfully kicked the Blues lone convert, while Hart and Knezevich combined for 10 converts on the afternoon.
