The University of Toronto Varsity Blues women's lacrosse team delivered a strong offensive outing in Guelph, Ont., this weekend (Sept. 30) defeating the Guelph Gryphons 18-4 before falling short in a near come-from-behind effort versus the Western Mustangs 13-11.
U of T saw six different players record a goal in the opening match of the afternoon against the Gryphons.
Second-year midfielder Sarah Morgan led the way with a seven point effort, recording a hat-trick and four assists. Veteran midfielder Melissa Holland was right behind, recording six points on a team-high four goals and two assists. Sarah Jamieson tied Holland for the team lead in goals with four of her own, while Geneva Calder, Zoe Chad, and Mary Anne Meerasabeer each added a pair of markers with Laurel McGillis recording a single in the decisive win.
Toronto then opened their second match of the day against a very tough Mustangs team with a slow first half which saw the Blues down 7-4 at the break. A second half comeback looked to be in the works with U of T closing to within two goals with a minute remaining in regulation, but the Blues were unable to close the distance in time.
Both Holland and Jamieson once again recorded a team-high with hat-tricks between the pair. Meerasabeer chipped in with two goals, while Morgan, Calder and McGillis all added single markers.
The Varsity Blues will host the York Lions next Friday, October 6 in the first of only two home games at Varsity Stadium this season. Action is set to begin at 5 p.m.
