Box Score The No. 6 University of Toronto Varsity Blues men's soccer team remains undefeated on the season after tying the Ryerson Rams 1-1 on Saturday afternoon (Sept. 23) at Varsity Stadium.
Â
The draw pushes the Blues record to 6-0-3, remaining in first place in the OUA East. The Rams record sits at 2-6-1, placing them in a tie for seventh.
"Today we really praise the whole group, that was a team effort," said Varsity Blues head coach Anthony Capotosto. "We know that Ryerson is a good team and that we may end up seeing them again in the playoffs, so this was a taste of what we will see come October. I thought that our guys put in a great shift today, fought for one another, and picked up a very important point against a very good team.
Toronto got on the scoresheet first with a goal from third-year defender Kenny Lioutas in the 18th minute. Off a free kick from rookie midfielder Marko Mandekic, Lioutas delivered a nice touch with his head to steer the ball past Rams keeper Praveen Ahilan.
Â
The rest of the first half saw steady back-and-forth action between the opponents as they not only battled each other but the scorching heat.
Â
Just minutes into the second half, U of T striker Jae Jin Lee had a great chance off a beautiful pass from fellow striker Antonio Ajhert, but just missed.
Â
Ryerson, not giving up, battled back and evened the score in the 90
th minute with a header goal from Nick Lambis.
Â
Varsity Blues goalkeeper Mark Rogal posted three saves in the draw, while Ahilan posted one save for the Rams.
"There's only one expectation for us the rest of this season and that is to get better," mentioned Capotosto post-game. "We're going to progress into the month of October and hopefully we're playing our best soccer at the end of that month."
Â
The Blue and White next hit the road to take on RMC on Saturday, September 30 in Kingston, Ontario. Game time is set for 3:15 p.m.
