FIELD HOCKEY OPENS 2017 WITH A TIE AND WIN IN GUELPH

The three-time OUA defending champion University of Toronto Varsity Blues field hockey team tied the Guelph Gryphons 1-1 before topping the Waterloo Warriors 7-1 on Sunday, September 17 in Guelph, Ont.

The Blues found themselves trailing 1-0 late in the first game of the day, after Guelph opened the scoring on a penalty corner in the 35th minute. That's when fifth-year defender Taylor Fleck stepped up, scoring off a penalty corner in the 62nd minute to earn the season-opening draw.

Sophomore standout Elizabeth O'Hara earned the tie in net.

After a slow start in the second game of the day, Toronto opened the flood gates versus the Warriors. Rookie forward Anna Costanzo notched her first career goal as a Varsity Blue early in the game and sophomore midfielder Rachel Spouge made is 2-0 off a penalty corner with two minutes remaining in the half.

The Warriors cut the lead and got on the board off a penalty corner early in the second half, but it was all U of T from there. Both Costanzo and Spouge added their second goals of the game, while Emily Ziraldo, Nicole Spring and Maris Rostek rounded out the scoring, with Rostek's goal marking her first in the Blue and White.

Third-year goalie Sara Fredo earned the win for the Blues.

The Varsity Blues return to action next Saturday, September 23 as they travel to Kingston, Ont., to take on the York Lions and Western Mustangs.
