LAI EARNS 5TH AT 2017 FISU GAMES

University of Toronto Varsity Blues badminton standout Jonathan Lai, alongside partner Jason Ho Shue, earned an impressive fifth place result in the men's doubles event at the 2017 FISU Summer Universiade in Taipei City, Chinese Taipei.

Lai and his partner defeated the U.S. in their opening round of 32 match, winning in straight sets 21-12, 21-17. In the round of 16, the duo were victorious in a three set contest versus Singapore, 21-15, 13-21, 21-16. The pairs strong play, however, was halted in the quarterfinals where they fell in straight sets to the eventual bronze medalists from Chinese Taipei, 7-21, 8-21.

Lai also competed in the mixed doubles event finishing in 21st with partner Michelle Tong. Together the team defeated Nigeria 21-5, 21-8 to open the tournament with a round of 64 victory. A straight sets loss to Russia, 15-21, 11-21, in the round of 32 ended their chances in the bracket style tournament.

Also competing at the 2017 FISU Summer Universiade was fellow Varsity Blue Brittany Tam, who placed 13th in the women's singles bracket and 32nd in women's doubles.

Tam's impressive singles run began with a straight sets victory, 21-11, 21-12, over Iran in the round of 64. This opening win was followed by a hard-fought come-from-behind three set victory over Sri Lanka, 7-21, 21-16, 21-19. Tam's momentum was ended in the round of 16 where she fell in straight sets against Malaysia, 8-21, 18-21.

In women's doubles, Tam and her partner Takeisha Wang dropped their opening round of 32 match against Thailand, 16-21, 10-21.

Both Varsity Blues student-athletes also contributed in Canada's 13th place finish in the mixed team event.
