MACNAUGHTON, NAZEMI PLACE 10TH AT 2017 FISU SUMMER UNIVERSIADE

University of Toronto Varsity Blues men's soccer players Lukas MacNaughton and Koosha Nazemi helped Canada to a 10th-place finish at the 2017 FISU Summer Universiade in Taipei.

The duo and Canada placed third in Pool B action, going 1-2 in the preliminary round. Canada opened the international tournament with a 2-0 loss to Uruguay before falling 5-0 to Japan. The Red and White notched their first victory with a 2-1 win over Malaysia to round out pool play.

Canada went onto top the United States, 2-0, before also defeating South Africa, 2-1 to earn a spot in the 9th-10th match. There, Canada dropped a narrow 4-3 decision to Brazil to earn the 10th-place finish, with MacNaughton scoring the first goal of the match.

Entering his third year with U of T, Nazemi has been a regular fixture in the Varsity Blues lineup stifling the opposition from his right back position. A stout defensive presence, Nazemi showcases an ability to take away one half of the pitch while also pushing the offence forward with effective runs from the back end. Picking up his first career goal this past season, the Mississauga, Ont. native also shows that his abilities continue to grow.

A defensive juggernaut, MacNaughton has displayed amazing ability to both hold the back line for U of T while also contributing offensively as a key in set pieces. Showing versatility as a strong centre back or facilitating midfielder, MacNaughton has earned OUA East first team all-star recognition the past three consecutive seasons and was also named a U SPORTS second team all-Canadian in 2015. This past season the Varsity Blues captain also topped the team in scoring with seven goals, helping lead U of T to provincial bronze.
