Box Score Challenging the undefeated No. 4 Queen's Gaels in their final regular season home game, the University of Toronto Varsity Blues women's basketball team fell 71-44 Saturday evening (Feb. 4) at the Goldring Centre for High Performance Sport.
With the loss the Varsity Blues record drops to 7-9, but they continue to hold onto third place in the OUA East.
A low scoring first quarter saw both teams struggle to find their shooting stroke.Â
However, the pace would pick up in a more back-and-forth second as the Blues trailed 30-21 at the break.
The Gaels utilized halftime for defensive adjustments coming back from the locker room with a new intensity in their full court press.
Struggling to break through, U of T fell behind 54-32 heading into the fourth and were unable to find an offensive run to answer the nationally ranked defensive effort.
Second-year forward Sarah Bennett was a shining star for the Blues off the bench as she recorded her first career double-double with a career-high's 10 points and 10 rebounds.
Toronto backcourt duo Rahshida Atkinson and Keyira Parkes scored 9 and 7 respectively.
Gaels forward Robyn Pearson led all players on the night with 18 points, adding 10 rebounds for the double-double.
The Varsity Blues now end their regular season on a three game road swing beginning just down the road against the No. 8 Ryerson Rams next Friday, February 10. Tip off is set for 6 p.m. with the action streamed live on OUA.tv.
