The University of Toronto Varsity Blues badminton team claimed their second straight provincial title as the 2017 OUA championship wrapped up on Sunday afternoon (Feb. 19) at York University.

The Blues defeated the Western Mustangs 6-1 in the OUA final, including a thrilling 2-1 (21-18Â 18-21Â 25-23) victory for Kristy Chan and Jonathan Lai in mixed doubles action and a come-from-behind 2-1 (14-21Â 21-14Â 21-15) win for Jack Lin in men's singles action.

It marks Toronto's fifth OUA title since 1997, and third in five seasons.
Bethany So was named the female most valuable player at the end of the championship after going undefeated in six matches. In her four singles matches she outscored her opponents 168-53, including a 21-7, 21-5 triumph over Western's Claudia Tai in the championship match.Â
The male rookie of the year award was given to Jonathan Lai from the champion Blues. He won two singles matches in the preliminary round and picked up three mixed doubles victories.
The Blues head coach, Stéphane Cadieux, won the coach of the year award for the second straight year after leading his team to defend their title in just his second year at the helm.Â
