The University of Toronto Varsity Blues women's tennis team will challenge for bronze following a nail-biting 4-3 OUA championship semifinal loss to the No. 2 seeded Western Mustangs on Saturday afternoon (Oct. 7).
The most tightly contested match of the provincial tournament began with Toronto securing the doubles round, picking up two wins including a thrilling tiebreak victory for the pair of Carmen Lai and Alara Demirag. However, the Mustangs rebounded in the singles round with No. 5 Agathe Keromnes claiming the decisive fourth singles victory for Western in front of a captivated crowd. Varsity Blues No. 2 and No. 3 players, Mara Stroe and Samar Qaedizadeh, were undefeated in the semifinal, winning their doubles match 8-4 before both claiming strong singles wins.
The Blue and White will now compete for bronze at the Mayfair Parkway Club in Markham, Ont., taking on the No. 4 seeded Montreal Carabins after they dropped their semifinal contest with the No. 1 York Lions. First serve for U of T is set for 10:30 a.m., followed by the gold-medal match between the Mustangs and Lions at 11:30 a.m.
