BLUES FALL TO LIONS, MARTLETS

The University of Toronto Varsity Blues field hockey team fell 3-1 to the York Lions before dropping a 4-3 decision to the McGill Martlets on Sunday, October 1 at Back Campus.

The Lions got out to a quick 1-0 lead in the second minute and held that advantage at the half. York scored two more goals in the 45th and 51st minutes to build a 3-0 win, before veteran defender Taylor Fleck broke the shutout with a goal off of a corner opportunity for the Blues.

Toronto got out to a better start in the second game of the day as veteran Megan Johansen and rookie Anna Costanzo scored in the 5th and 7th minutes, respectively to put the home team up 2-0 in the early goings.

The Martlets responded though with goals six minutes apart and the game was deadlocked at 2-2 at the half.

McGill took the lead as Bresshey Roskams Hie scored in the 53rd minute, but Johansen tied it up with a goal off of another corner opportunity in the 66th minute. The Martlets pressed and were rewarded as Constanza Martinez scored the game-winner in the 68th minute off of a corner.

The Varsity Blues return to action on Saturday, October 14 as they host the Waterloo Warriors and Queen's Gaels at Back Campus.
