CURLING ESTABLISHES THEMSELVES AS CONTENDERS AT BROCK INVITATIONAL

The University of Toronto Varsity Blues men's and women's curling team performed like championship contenders this past weekend at the Brock Invitational (Jan. 21-22) as the women's side amassed an undefeated record of 3-0-1 (W-L-T) while the men finished with an impressive 3-1-0 record.

"The Brock Invitiationl is a good testing ground for our teams leading up to the OUA championships," said head coach John Rudd. "Both our men's and women's teams definitely sent a message that our opponents need to watch out because we are OUA contenders this season on both sides of the draw."

Utilizing the combination of skip Deanna Caldwell, vice Deborah Hawkshaw, second Sabrina Ribau, lead Montse De Los Rios, and alternates Brittany Prevost and Madeleine Spurgeon, the Varsity Blues women's team opened the weekend with three straight victories defeating Western JV 7-4, Queen's 6-5, and McMaster JV 6-5. U of T ended the tournament with a 5-5 tie with McMaster.

On the men's side, skip Jack Lindsay led his team of vice Geoff Elliott, second Travis Ackroyd, lead Jacob Weber, and alternate Justin Chung to a simliar 3-0 start defeating Western JV 7-3, Queen's 8-2, and Brock 8-2. The Blues dropped their final contest with RMC 7-4.

The Varsity Blues will have one more opportunity at the McMaster Bonspiel this weekend (Jan. 28-29) in Hamilton, Ont. to prepare for the OUA championships later in February (Feb. 16-20).
