BLUES ADVANCE TO FIRST-EVER CIS FINAL

The No. 2 nationally ranked University of Toronto Varsity Blues women's volleyball team defeated the UBC-Okanagan Heat 3-1 (21-25, 26-24, 25-22, 25-21) in semi-final action to advance to their first-ever national final at the 2016 CIS championships at Brandon University.

The Blues, who with tonight's win have guaranteed their first CIS medal in program history, will play the defending champion Trinity Western Spartans in the gold-medal match on Sunday night at 7 p.m. EST. The game will be streamed live on CIS-SIC.tv.

Fourth-year left side hitter Caleigh Cruickshank led all players with 22 points on 18 kills, three aces and one block, while adding eight digs en route to player of the match honours.

CIS rookie of the year Alina Dormann added 19 points on 16 kills, two blocks and one ace and had nine digs on the night. Sophomore left side hitter Anna Feore added 10 kills, 2.5 blocks and one ace, while Blues setter Madelyn Mandryk tallied 51 assists and nine digs in the victory.

Toronto trailed 9-5 early but battled back and a kill from Dormann put them up 16-15 at the technical timeout. UBC-O kept the game tight and were able to pull away to take the first set, 25-21.

U of T got out to a 6-1 advantage in the second set but the Heat rallied to bring it within two (12-10). Cruickshank took control and with her first serving ace of the match, put Toronto up 16-11 at the break. UBC-O bounced back again to even the score at 16-16 and the set remained tight until the bitter end. A final block from Radan and Mandryk evened the match, 26-24 for U of T.

The third set proved to be a back-and-forth battle with Toronto carrying a 16-14 lead into the technical timeout. Back-to-back aces from Cruickshank put the Blues up by five (20-15) and a final kill from Davis put the Blues in the lead, 25-22.

The Blues carried their momentum into the fourth set, getting out to a 6-1 advantage, en route to a 16-10 lead at the technical timeout. Toronto sealed their victory with a serving error from UBC-O, 25-21.
