Box Score The No. 2 nationally ranked University of Toronto Varsity Blues women's volleyball team defeated the Ottawa Gee-Gees 3-0 (25-18, 25-13, 25-8) in OUA quarter-final action on Saturday afternoon (Feb. 27) at Goldring Centre for High Performance Sport.
As the highest remaining seed, the Blues will now host the OUA Final Four next Friday and Saturday night (March 4-5) at Goldring Centre. Toronto will play the first semifinal match, taking on the McMaster Marauders on Friday night at 6 p.m. The second semifinal will feature the Ryerson Rams and Western Mustangs at 8 p.m. The medal matches set for 6 and 8 p.m. on Saturday night.
First-year right side hitter Alina Dormann led the Blues with 13 points on 10 kills and three blocks, while also adding six digs on the day.
Veterans Caleigh Cruickshank and Tessa Davis each added 11 points and five digs, with Davis recording a game-high four blocks. Bojana Radan and Anna Feore recorded nine points each, while fourth-year setter Madelyn Mandryk tallied 30 assists and a game-high 13 digs.
The first set was tightly contested from the get-go, tied 9-9 in the early goings. A couple of key points from Radan gave the Blues a bit of a cushion and they took a 16-12 lead into the first set technical timeout. U of T led by as many as seven, but the Gee-Gees rallied to bring the set back within four (22-18). The Blues held on and with a final point from Tessa Davis, took the first set 25-18.
Toronto continued to lead through the second set, building a 16-10 advantage at the technical timeout. U of T rode a 9-0 run, highlighted by two single blocks from Dormann, and a final kill from Mandryk sealed the 25-13 second set victory.
U of T built an early 10-2 advantage in the third set, with Ottawa unable to mount a comeback. Leading 16-5 at the break, Toronto cruised to the straight sets victory, 25-8.
Ottawa was led by Caroline Lemay, who notched six kills and eight digs, while Kira Tome had nine assists and 10 digs in the loss.
Tension will be high at the OUA Final Four, as only the champion will advance to the 2016 CIS championship, March 11-13, at Brandon University.Â
