The University of Toronto Varsity Blues women's rugby team opened their 2015 regular season with a 51-17 loss to the Laurier Golden Hawks on Saturday afternoon (Sept. 12) at Varsity Centre.

Laurier got out to an early 15-0 lead with two tries from Gillian Geremia and Kelly Martin, as well as a penalty goal and conversion from Jennifer Gilmour.

The Blues got on the board in the 38th minute, charging down the field so that rookie Jordyn Orlando of Burlington, Ont., could finish it off for a try. Sonia Ralston successfully converted the try and Laurier carried a 15-7 lead into halftime.

Orlando powered her way to her second try of the game in the 43rd minute and another Ralston conversion brought Toronto with one (14-15).

The Hawks responded with a Gilmour penalty goal and a try from Chloe Graves, but U of T came back as Ralston made good on the penalty goal to make it 23-17 for Laurier in the 63rd minute.

It was all Laurier from there as the visiting team notched four more tries and conversions en route to the 51-17 win.

The Varsity Blues return to action next Saturday, September 19 when they host the York Lions at Varsity Centre at 7 p.m.
