BLUES FIFTH AT OUA CHAMPIONSHIP

The University of Toronto Varsity Blues badminton team placed fifth overall the 2015 OUA championship, March 20-22, at Ryerson University.

Toronto qualified 14 of 19 teams for the main event, which placed them third out of 10 teams.

In men's single action, Guanqiu Liu reached the quarter-finals with a win against Mario Umana (McMaster) 16-21, 21-18, 21-17 and a huge upset win against Clarence Chan (Waterloo) 22-24, 21-18, 21-19. He then lost to No. 3 seed Jack Hall (Western) 19-21, 18-21 in the quarter-finals.
 
Allen Chee reached the round of 16 in singles but lost to Western's Avery Lee 12-21, 19-21.
 
Yue Wang reached the quarter-finals of the women's singles main event with a 21-11, 21-19 win against Ryerson's Avenie Lee, but lost to top seed Surabhi Kadam (Waterloo) 13-21, 9-21. Both Shi Yi Lu and Alexander Lloyd lost in the first round of the main event
 
In men's doubles, Christopher Ng and Po Han Wu fell in first round of main event to Waterloo's Philip Lau and Nathan Leung 14-21, 14-21.Thanh Lam and Adam Wolski lost in round of 16 to Ryerson's Kirk Hansen and Nathan Cheng 16-21, 17-21. Michael Wu and Jonathan Young fell in the first round of main event to Shi Han and Andrew Quach (York0 15-21, 21-15, 17-21), while Allen Chee and Guanqiu Liu won their first round in the main event against Ho Ing Li and Hamza YOusaf 21-19, 21-14 but lost in the quarters to Clarence Chan and Wesley Marr 15-21, 16-21.
 
Teresa Dan and Jennifer Huynh lost in the round of 16 of women's doubles to Ottawa's Sarah Bowman and Chinue De La Merced 21-9, 21-4. Shi Yi Lu and Yue Wang lost to Niki Cai and Kelly Ho 8-21, 9-21 in the round of 16, with Yen Zoo Chen and Nirosha Damboragama falling in round or 16 to Ailynna Chen and Christine Nguyen (Waterloo) 15-21, 22-20, 29-30 in the most exciting match of the evening.
 
Adam Wolski and Teresa Dan pair in mix doubles. They fell to Ho Ming Li and Jade Clarke (York) in the first round of main event. Thanh Lam and Xue Jie Jing won their first round match in mixed doubles against Ryerson's Matthew Pang/Joyce Mak but lost to Kevin Tseng and Sarah Bowman (Ottawa) in the round of 16 to end the Blues tournament.
