Box Score Fifth-year guard Jill Stratton recorded a double-double of 19 points and 13 boards in leading the University of Toronto Varsity Blues women's basketball team to a 79-73 win over the Brock Badgers on Saturday afternoon (Feb. 14) in St. Catharines, Ont.
With the win, the Blues improve to 9-8 and remain in third place in the OUA East division.Â
Stratton (Etobicoke, Ont.) went 7-for-21 from the floor, while adding five assists and one steal on the day.
RECORD WATCH: Stratton is 14 points away from breaking U of T's all-time career regular season scoring record, currently held by Alaine Hutton (1,241, 2004-09).
Both Julie Longauer and Rahshida Atkinson had 10 points apiece, with Liane Bailey adding nine points and six boards. Alanna Garner notched eight points and nine boards, while Abena Addo had five points and seven rebounds in the win.
Up 19-16 after the first quarter, the Blues outscored the Badgers 24-8 in the second to take a 43-24 lead into halftime. Brock rallied late in the fourth and brought the game within three with 30 seconds remaining, but Stratton drained three late free throws to seal the win for the Blues.
Three Badgers hit double digits with Kira Cornelissen recording 18 points and six rebounds. Jenalyn Yumoi had a double-double of 16 points and 10 boards, with Kayla Santilli adding 13 points in the loss.
The Varsity Blues return to action this Wednesday, February 18 as they host the York Lions at Goldring Centre for High Performance Sport. Tip off is set for 6 p.m.Â
