U of T struggled from the field in the early going shooting just 27 percent in the first half. Second-year guard Sage Usher (Toronto) was leaned on heavily in the opening quarters, leading the team with eight points at the break, including going 2-for-2 from the three point line. Usher would finish the game with 14 points and four assists.
His counterpart, guard Jenning Leung was the difference maker on the night, leading McGill with 22 points. The shifty point-man saw several Varsity Blues defenders attempt to shut him down with first-year guard Wilson Torres (Toronto) having the most success. Torres was responsible for a strong third quarter run from Toronto, invigorating the Varsity Blues defence while knocking down a string of quick baskets. Torres ended the night leading the team with 15 points going 6-for-11 from the field and 2-for-3 from behind the arc.
The frontcourt for U of T was also led by a newcomer in first-year forward Daniel Johansson (Stockholm, Sweden). Johansson was in tough down low as the McGill defence looked to collapse on any entry passes. Despite the strong defensive effort, Johannson finished the night with 14 hard-earned points.
The Varsity Blues will continue preseason action next Thursday, October 8 as they get set to welcome the StFX X-Men to Goldring Centre.
