Box ScoreThe University of Toronto Varsity Blues men's basketball team dropped an 81-76 decision to the Bishop's Gaiters on Day 1 of the House Laughton tournament at Carleton University Friday night.
Bishop's Peter Weston dropped a team-high 21 points for the Gaiters as he hit some clutch free throws in the final minutes to give his side the win.
Both teams came out firing in the first quarter as the the Gaiters made an early run before the Blues battled back courtesy of Devon Williams, who poured in eight points, including two three-point baskets. Bishop's Abdul Kamane made an early impact for his side as he added seven points in the first quarter to give the Gaiters a 19-18 lead after one.
There was little differentiation between the Varsity Blues and Gaiters in the second quarter. Peter Weston of Bishop's scored seven points while Austin Macklem contributed another five. However, the Gaiters struggled shooting the ball from outside, going 2-9 from beyond the arc in the first half. The Varsity Blues shot 50% from 3-point land in the first twenty minutes, but the Gaiters led 36-35 going into the break.
The third quarter started slowly as both teams were evenly split down the middle. Neither side could climb ahead by more than five points at any time, as both sides stayed within striking distance. Toronto's Devon Williams poured in seven points in the quarter, but the Gaiters led the Blues 55-53 after three.
The game started to heat up in the final minutes of the fourth, as Bishop's Peter Weston hit a clutch shot on a drive to the basket while drawing the foul. After converting on his free throw, Toronto's floor general, Sage Usher, replied within seconds as he dribbled through a few Bishop's defenders before scoring on a layup as he drew contact in the process. Usher knocked down his free throw, and the score was tied at 75-75 with 1:32 to play in the game.
Bishop's hit some clutch shots as well as a few free throw to give themselves a 3-point lead with seconds left in the game. Sage Usher of Toronto went for a quick two instead of a three to tie, but he missed a tough layup before Bishop's regained possession to close the game out
The Blues are back at it tomorrow night as they take on the host Ravens at 8 p.m.
