The University of Toronto Varsity Blues badminton team competed at the IUCC Durham tournament on Sunday, January 25.

Men's Doubles
Men's team co-captain Derek Leung paired with Guanqiu Liu to reach the finals of the main event in men's doubles with a convincing win in the semifinals against Shi Han/Andrew Quach (York) 21-11, 21-18 but then lost in the finals against York's Hamza Yousaf/Ho Min Li 19-21, 16-21. Fellow team captain Jonathan Young paired with Allen Chee and reached the semifinals where they also played Yousaf/Li and played a great match losing 21-17, 14-21, 17-21 to finish third.

Women's Doubles
The women's teams were just as successful as the men as team co-captain Nirosha Damboragama paired with Shi Yi Lu for the first time and the pair reached the main event finals with solid wins against Laurier and Conestoga College and in the final they played against Adrienne Goldsworthy (Waterloo) and Rachel Goldsworthy (UOIT) and lost 21-13, 19-21, 13-21. Teammates Xue Jie Jing and Yue Wang reached the semifinals and met up with the Goldsworthy pair and played a terrific match as well losing 21-10, 20-22, 15-21 to finish third.

Teresa Dan paired with Jennifer Huynh to finish second in the B flight of the competition.

Mixed Doubles
Guanqiu Liu and Nirosha Damboragama reached the finals of the main event with wins against Trent, Laurier and York but in the finals they met their match as they lost a close three-gamer to Ho Ming Li/Jade Clarke (York) 21-11, 16-21, 18-21 and finished as silver medallists.

Po-Han Wu and Yen Zoo Chen reached the semifinals with a first round win against Laurier and a quarter-final win against teammates Derek Leung and Yue Wang 21-8, 18-21, 15-21 but lost in the semis to Li/Clarke 17-21, 15-21. Michael Wu and Jennifer Huynh reached the quarter-finals with wins against McMaster and York but them as with our other two teams lost to Li/Clarke (York) to finish fifth.

Team co-captain Jonathan Young paired with Shi Yi Lu as a new combination and played inspired mixed doubles all day and improved throughout the day. The pair lost their first match to Jim Zeng/Andrea Lam (McMaster) 18-21, 17-21 but then won three consecutive matches in B flight against York to reach the final of that flight. In that final the Toronto pair met York's Shi Han and Chhiv Jing Yang and lost 16-21, 21-18, 11-21 to finish second in B flight.

On Friday night our Varsity Blues competes in a 15-match competition against McMaster University at the Athletic Centre (Upper Gym) with game time at 7:00 p.m.
