University of Toronto Varsity Blues soccer players Kilian Elkinson and Claudia Piazza have been named the Varsity Blues Muscle Mlk male and female athletes of the week for the period ending September 7.
Fifth-year striker Varsity Blues Kilian Elkinson earns his second consecutive athlete of the week award after scoring three goals in a dominant 5-1 win over the UOIT Ridgebacks this past week in OUA men's soccer action.
Elkinson had a hand in all five goals in the game, setting up the other two. The philosophy major from Toronto netted the eventual game-winner in the 17th minute, coming down the right side of the field and crossing the ball into the far side of the net.
He put the Blues ahead by three after receiving a nice cross and slotting it into the mesh in the 42nd minute. Elkinson added his third goal late in the match, firing a ball off the UOIT goalkeeper and into the net.
Elkinson currently ranks second in the OUA and CIS with five goals in four games.
Second-yard midfielder Claudia Piazza notched one goal in helping the Varsity Blues women's soccer team to a 1-1 record this past weekend in Ottawa.
Piazza scored the eventual game-winner in the fourth minute of Sunday's 2-0 victory over Carleton. The Brampton, Ont., native picked off a Ravens pass and sent a booming shot over the keeper's head and into the top right corner of the net.
A linguistics major, Piazza was also instrumental in U of T's rally versus the No. 8 Ottawa Gee-Gees on Saturday. Despite the 2-1 loss, Piazza controlled the game in the midfield and was a major factor in Toronto's come-from-behind attempt late in the match.
