Fifth-year striker Kilian Elkinson scored three goals in leading the University of Toronto Varsity Blues men's soccer team to a 5-1 win over the UOIT Ridgebacks on Wednesday afternoon (Sept. 3) at Varsity Centre.

It marked the first time the two teams had ever met in the regular season. With the win, the Blues improve to 2-0-1 on the year. Elkinson (Toronto) now leads all players in the OUA with five goals in three games.

Second-year midfielder Lukas MacNaughton (Brussels) opened the scoring in the 14th minute when he headed an Elkinson free kick past Ridgebacks goalkeeper Travis Martin.

The Blues extended their lead three minutes later as Elkinson came down the right side and sent the ball into the far left side of the net.

Elkinson had another chance to score in the 38th minute, but his free kick rang off the post. The OUA male athlete of the week did however add to Toronto's lead in the 42nd minute, receiving a nice cross from Russell Rodrigues before booting it into the back of the net.  Toronto led 3-0 at the half.

Toronto went up 4-0 in the 64th minute when Elkinson sent a long ball to the front of the net and Nikolay Saveliev  deked around the goalie to put it in.

The Ridgebacks finally got on the board when Lee-Victor Massunda beat a Toronto defender and slotted the ball into the bottom right corner of the net in the 77th minute.

Elkinson responded with his third goal of the game, receiving a pass from Max Gray and firing a shot off Martin and into the net.

Blues goalkeeper Rab Bruce-Lockhart made three saves in the win.

The Varsity Blues return to action this Sunday, September 7 as they head to Ottawa to take on the Carleton Ravens. Game time is set for 3:15 p.m.
