Box Score Photo GalleryThe University of Toronto Varsity Blues men's soccer team scored twice in the first half to upset the No. 8 Queen's Gaels on Sunday, September 21 at Varsity Centre.
Â
With the win, the Blues move into a tie with the Gaels for second place in the OUA East with identical 5-2-1 records.
Â
The two teams traded chances in the first 10 minutes of action. Eric Koskins of the Gaels sent a nice cross to Tommy Hong, but his shot sailed just wide of the net. Â Less than a minute later, Nikolay Savelieve broke through the Gaels back line but couldn't get the ball past Queen's goalkeeper Taylor Reynolds.
Â
It wasn't until the 32nd minute that the deadlock was broken. Fifth-year striker Kilian Elkinson intercepted a Gaels pass back to the goalkeeper and made no mistake in finding the back of the mesh.
Â
10 minutes later, Elkinson sent a pass into the box and Nikolay Saveliev was there to bang in the rebound.
Â
Toronto led 2-0 at the half.
Â
The play went back and forth in the second half. The Gaels got on the board in the 86th minute as Koskins headed in an Oliver Coren free kick. U of T played out the remaining time and earned the upset win.
Â
Blues goalkeeper Mark Rogal made two saves in the victory.
Â
The Varsity Blues return to action next Saturday, September 27 as they travel to take on the No. 4 Ryerson Rams. Game time is set for 2:15 p.m.
