Simpson earned a bronze medal at the 1971 Pan American Games and placed fifth at the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich. After graduating with a Bachelor's of Science in 1974, Simpson continued his pole vaulting mastery, garnering a silver medal at the 1975 Pan Am Games and gold at the 1978 Commonwealth Games and 1979 Pan Am Games.  He was also a finalist at the 1976 Olympics.
