Box Score The University of Toronto Varsity Blues women's basketball team fell 63-57 to the Ottawa Gee-Gees on Saturday night (Nov. 29) at Montpetit Hall.
With the loss, the Blues drop to 4-4 but remain tied with the Queen's Gaels (4-3) for second place in the OUA East heading into the December break.
Abena Addo led the Blues with 14 points, seven boards and three steals on the night. Rookie Maddy Baker notched 10 points, while Jill Stratton had seven points and a game-high 11 rebounds in the loss.
Jennifer Stoqua and Stephanie MacDonald notched six and seven early points, respectively, to give the Gee-Gees a 13-2 lead in the opening minutes. Ottawa held an 18-10 lead after the first 10 minutes.
The second quarter started as a very low-scoring affair, but the Blues offence sparked and a couple of three's from rookie Maddy Baker brought the game within two (24-22) at halftime.
The two teams traded the lead throughout the third quarter and the game was even at 45-45 heading into the final frame.
Ottawa opened the fourth on a 10-2 run to seal the win. The Blues were able to bring it back within two (59-57) late in the game, but the Gee-Gees held on for the six-point win.
MacDonald led all players with 19 points and seven rebounds, while Kellie Ring added 12 points, seven boards and six assists in the win.
The Varsity Blues head to Halifax for the Saint Mary's tournament, December 28-30, before returning to OUA regular season action on Wednesday, January 7 as they host the Ryerson Rams at Goldring Centre for High Performance Sport.
