The University of Toronto Varsity Blues men's and women's water polo teams are off to Ottawa to compete at this weekend's (November 28-30) 2014 OUA championship, hosted by the Carleton Ravens.
Women's Championship Preview
Toronto is the top ranked team heading into the three-day tournament, and will play the winner of Carleton/Queen's on Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. The winner of that game will earn a spot in Sunday's championship final at 4 p.m.
The Blues earned their fifth title in program history and second in three years when they defeated the Ravens 10-4 in last season's OUA final.
Toronto is a perfect 8-0 versus OUA competition this year, marking the second consecutive season without a conference loss. Their last loss to an OUA team came versus Carleton on Nov. 25, 2012.
Fourth-year goaltender Breanna Gadzosa of Okotoks, Alta., is back to lead the Blues in net. The two-time OUA most valuable goalie has averaged only 5.4 goals against in Toronto's eight games versus OUA teams.
Fourth-year veteran Danielle Hirsh and sophomore Emily Bidinosti are also returning OUA all-stars for the Blues.
A native of Kitchener, Ont., Bidinosti led the team in scoring, notching 17 goals in six games, while Hirsh has notched nine goals against OUA team this season.
Rookie Alexandra Kraft of Ladera Ranch, California, scored 12 goals, while Ana Miroslavic and Marianne Tout also tallied nine goals apiece.
Men's Championship Preview
U of T's men are also the top seeded team heading into this weekend. The Blues will face the winner of McMaster/Queen's on Saturday at 3:20 p.m., in hopes of earning a spot in Sunday's championship final.
Toronto looks to regain OUA supremacy after narrowly falling to the Ravens in last year's final at Varsity Pool. U of T has met Carleton in five of the last six OUA finals.
The Blues have won 29 provincial titles in program history, dating back to their first in 1926-27. U of T has been dominant in the last decade, claiming eight of the last 12 OUA banners.
Sophomore standout Gorast Tasevski of Skopje, Macdeonia was named an OUA all-star at last year's championship. Veteran and two-time OUA all-star Luke Spooner, as well as 2012 OUA all-star Milos Radojcic are also back to lead the Blues.
