Men's team captain Jonathan Young had an outstanding evening as he played No. 1 in both men's singles and mixed doubles and won both matches. In singles, after a rather slow and tentative start to the match he won 21-19, 21-14, using short service and his power to force his opponent Shi Han into errors. In mixed doubles he paired with first-year Xue Jie Jing, and defeated Hamza Yousaf and Andrea Chin for the first time ever 19-21, 21-17, 22-20 in what would be the most exciting match of the evening.
First-year Varsity Blue Yen Zoo Chen played a very strong match in women's No. 1 singles against York's Mars Jing and won easily, 21-10, 21-15. Yen Zoo had excellent service and controlled strokes during the rallies, which wore out her opponent physically. In #3 mixed doubles, Chen dominated the net as she and fellow rookie Hong Zhang won 21-13, 22-17 against York's Andrew Quach and Yuqi Wang.
The Blues top female performer was first-year Jennifer Huynh who paired with Yue Wang to win No. 3 women's doubles 21-9, 21-5, and paired with Po-Han Wu in No. 2 mixed doubles to defeat Kevin Van and Andrea Chin 21-13, 22-20.
Eric Cao was outstanding in his first ever matches for Toronto, and dominated the No. 3 men's singles match against Danny Chen 21-6, 21-14 with his aggressive attacking game. Cao and Mike Wu teamed up to defeat York's Victor Ku and Ryan Lam 21-12, 21-14 in men's doubles, showcasing their strong offensive game. Â
