BLUES KEEP STREAK ALIVE IN WIN OVER LIONS

Box Score The No. 5 University of Toronto Varsity Blues women's volleyball team notched their first regular season victory over the York Lions since 2010 with a 3-1 (32-30, 18-25, 25-19, 25-19) win on Sunday afternoon at Tait MacKenzie Centre.

The win keeps U of T's win streak alive as they sit 7-0 atop the OUA East standings. The Lions now drop to 4-3 and are tied for fourth in the East. Toronto's last regular season win over York came on January 10, 2010.

Fifth-year right side hitter Jennifer Neilson led all players with 13 kills and 19 digs, while both Charlotte Sider and Caleigh Cruickshank added 12 kills on the day.

Sider, Neilson and libero Denise Wooding each had 19 digs, with Madelyn Mandryk notching 38 assists and 12 digs in the victory.

Leading 16-12 at the first set timeout, the Lions came back and held a 24-20 lead. That didn't stop the Blues as U of T went on a 6-2 streak to even the score and a final kill from Neilson sealed it 32-30 for Toronto.

U of T built another narrow lead at the second set time out (16-13), but the Lions rallied, ending on a 12-2 run to even the match and take the set 25-18.

The Blues found themselves down 12-9 in the third set but a seven point run gave them a 16-12 advantage at the break. Toronto took a 2-1 match lead with the 25-19 third set win.

Toronto led 16-12 at the fourth technical time out en route to the 25-19 fourth set victory.

York was led by Abby Ganzhorn and Michelle Pierce, who each had 11 kills in the loss.

The Varsity Blues return to the court next Sunday, November 23 as they host the OUA defending champion McMaster Marauders at Goldring Centre for High Performance Sport. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
