Five players hit double digits as the University of Toronto Varsity Blues women's basketball team defeated the Waterloo Warriors 83-58 on Tuesday, January 7 at the Athletic Centre Sports Gym.
The game was rescheduled after the Nov. 9 postponement and wraps up East vs West division play in OUA women's basketball regular season action.
With the win, the Blues improve to 4-6 and move into sole possession of fourth place in the East, two points ahead of the Ryerson Rams (3-7). The Warriors drop to 2-8 and remain in eighth in the West.
Second-year guard Alanna Garner tallied a team-high 14 points and five boards, while both Alicia Van Kampen and Liane Bailey added 13 points on the night. Veteran guards Rachael Sider and Jill Stratton notched 10 and 12 points, respectively, with Stratton adding eight assists in Toronto's highest offensive output this season.
Sider opened the game with two quick baskets and the Blues built a quick 14-5 lead in the opening minutes. The Warriors battled back to bring it within five, but Sider, Alanna Garner and Rashida Atkinson all drained three's to give the Blues a comfortable 30-13 lead after the first.
The two teams exchanged baskets to start the second but the Blues gradually extended their lead even further to take a 51-27 advantage into halftime.
Toronto continued to roll in the second half, with five players ending in double digits for the first time this season.
Kate Kuntze led the Warriors with 10 points, while Martin Killeen added nine points and eight boards in the loss.
The Varsity Blues return to action this Friday, January 10 as they head north to take on the York Lions (1-9). Tip off is set for 6 p.m.
