Fifth-year forward Alicia Van Kampen notched a career-high 18 points in leading the University of Toronto Varsity Blues women's basketball to a 75-35 win over the Algoma Thunderbirds in their annual Think Pink game on Friday night (Jan. 24) at the Athletic Centre Sports Gym.

With the win, the Blues improve to 7-8 and remain in fourth place, while the Thunderbirds drop to 0-15 and sit eighth in the OUA East division.

Van Kampen (Amaranth, Ont.) went 7-for-13 from the floor and 4-for-6 from the free throw line, while adding five boards and two blocks on the night.

Fellow fifth-year forward Kristy Chute (Windsor) added a double-double of 13 points and 10 rebounds, with rookie Rahshida Atkinson (Scarborough) adding 10 points in the win.

The two teams exchanged baskets to start the game, until a Liane Bailey three gave the home team a five-point lead midway through the first quarter.  Toronto extended their lead and were up 20-11 after the first quarter.

The Blues kept rolling in the second, thanks to an early three from Rahshida Atkinson and some great work under the basket from Van Kampen. Jovana Momic drained her first basket as a Varsity Blue and U of T held a 39-15 lead at halftime.

Van Kampen continued to dominate to start the second half and Blues leading scorer Jill Stratton drained back-to-back baskets as U of T outscored Algoma 25-10 to take a 39-point advantage (64-25) into the fourth quarter.

The Thunderbirds held the Blues to 11 points in the fourth quarter, but U of T came away with the dominant 75-35 win.

Sydney Resch led the Thunderbirds with 11 points in the loss.

The Varsity Blues return to the floor tomorrow night as they host the Laurentian Voyageurs at the Athletic Centre Sports Gym. Game time is set for 6 p.m.
