Box Score Fourth-year guard Jill Stratton notched a game and career-high 25 points in leading the University of Toronto Varsity Blues to a 70-56 upset win over the Queen's Gaels on Saturday night (Jan. 11) in Kingston, Ont.
With the win, the Blues improve to 5-7 and move into sole possession of fourth place, while the Gaels drop to 7-5 and sit third in the OUA East division.
Stratton (Etobicoke, Ont.) went 8-for-18 from the floor, draining a career-high five three-pointers, while adding six rebounds on the night. Fellow veteran guard Rachael Sider of New Westminster, B.C. recorded 17 points, three rebounds, three steals and two assists, while Alicia Van Kampen added a double-double of 10 points and 11 boards.
Vanessa Brathwaite had eight points, seven rebounds, five steals and three assists, with Liane Bailey adding seven points and six rebounds in the win.
The Gaels got out to a quick 5-0 lead, but the Blues quickly bounced back with a 10-2 run and built a 21-17 lead after the first quarter. U of T continued to press, going on another 10-2 run, and holding the Gaels to just six points in the second quarter to take a 39-23 advantage into halftime.
The two teams went back and forth and the Blues kept pace, maintaining a comfortable 15-point lead for the majority of the second half. Â
Jenna Wright led the Gaels with 13 points, while Liz Boag added 12 points and Pearson had eight points and 13 rebounds in the loss.
The Varsity Blues return to the court next Friday, January 17 as they travel to Ottawa to take on the No. 10 Gee-Gees. Game time is set for 6 p.m.
