SOLID TEAM EFFORT SINKS LAKERS

Four different players scored as the University of Toronto Varsity Blues men's soccer team defeated the Nipissing Lakers 4-1 for their first win of the season on Saturday, September 7 at Varsity Centre.

Fourth-year midfielder Velko Lukovic of Belgrade opened the scoring in the 10th minute of the match, potting U of T's first goal of the year after a 1-0 season-opener loss to the Carleton Ravens last week.

Nipissing Ryan Mantle (Orangville, Ont.) responded 16 minutes later, sliding the ball past Blues goalkeeper Kenneth Viegas into the bottom left corner of the net.

Winnipeg native and team co-captain Ezequiel Lubocki notched his ninth career goal in the 44th minute to give the Blues a 2-1 lead at the half.

U of T continued to dominate early in the second as veteran striker Mario Kovacevic (Woodbridge, Ont.) potted his first goal of the season in the 50th minute. The Blues other co-captain led the squad and ranked fourth in the OUA with nine goals in 2012.

First-year midfielder Nikolay Saveliev (Osaka, Japan) added an insurance marker, his first career goal in the Blue and White, in the 82nd minute to round out the 4-1 victory.

Viegas made four saves in his first start for the Blues.

The Varsity Blues return to the field tomorrow as they host the Laurentian Voyageurs at Varsity Centre. The game will be streamed live at GoBlues.tv starting at 2:15 p.m.
