The two-time OUA defending champion Varsity Blues field hockey team edged their rival Guelph Gryphons 2-1 on Saturday morning (Sept. 28) in Guelph, Ont.
With the win, the Blues improve to 6-0 and remain in first place, while the Gryphons drop to 4-1 and drop into second place in the OUA standings.
Fourth-year forward and OUA leading scorer Ally Evanyshyn (Burlington, Ont.) opened the scoring in the ninth minute for the Blues, and fellow veteran Justine Branco (Mississauga) notched the eventual game-winner just six minutes later.
The Gryphons cut the deficit to one in the 47th minute, as Daniela Jelec scored on a penalty stroke; however, Blues netminder Katy Jo Williams turned aside everything else that came her way to secure the win.
