BLUES TOP MUSTANGS, LIONS ON HOME TURF

The University of Toronto Varsity Blues field hockey team notched defeated the Western Mustangs 3-1 and York Lions 6-0 on Saturday (Sept. 21) at Varsity Centre.
 
After two weeks of regular season action, the Blues are 4-0 and in first place. 

Fourth-year midfielder Tegan Stairs opened the scoring in the fifth minute versus Western when she scooped up a loose ball in front of the net and back-handed it into the net.

Western had three consecutive corner opportunities midway through the first half, but Blues netminder Katy-Jo Williams stood tall as U of T held the one-goal lead at halftime.

The Mustangs evened the score early in the 49th minute, as Lauren MacKenzie scored on Western's second of two-straight corners chances; however, the Blues bounced right back as veteran Ally Evanyshyn tipped an Alex Thicke shot mid-air for the eventual game-winner.

Sophomore standout Emma Stairs added an insurance marker in the 60th minute to round out the 3-1 victory.

Thicke opened the scoring in the second game of the day, finding the back of the net in the second minute. Evanyshyn added two more in the seventh and 24th minutes to give Toronto a 3-0 lead at halftime. 

Lauren Sudac and Nicole Spring each tallied thier first goals as a Varsity Blue in the 44th and 54th minute, respectively, and Tegan Stairs added one in the dying seconds of the match to round out the dominant win.

Madeline Cho earned the shut out in her first career start. 

The Varsity Blues return to action tomorrow as they host the McGill Martlets at 10:45 a.m. at Varsity Centre.
