BROWN, WELLS EARN RELAY SILVER AT SUMMER UNIVERSIADE

University of Toronto Varsity Blues track and field athletes Alicia Brown and Sarah Wells earned a silver medal as members of Canada's 4x400 relay team as the athletics competition wrapped up Friday night at the 2013 Summer Universiade in Kazan, Russia.

The women's team of Brown (Ottawa), Wells (Unionville, Ont.), Noelle Montcalm of Windsor, Ont., and Helen Crofts of West Vancouver, B.C., ran 3:32.93 for the podium finish.

"To us it feels like we won," said Wells, who was a semi-finalist in 400-metre hurdles at the 2012 Olympics. "We knew Russia was going to be stacked, so we're really happy. It's a great way to close the competition."

"As the fourth runner [the gap] is a little terrifying because you don't want to be the one to lose the lead you have going," said Brown.

The Canadians were in second place throughout the race, with a sizeable gap between Russia, Canada and the bronze medal winners from South Africa.

Wells previously finished fourth in the women's 400m hurdles, while Brown earned a fifth-place finish in the women's 400m race earlier this week.
