University of Toronto Varsity Blues badminton players Bethany So and Andrew Wilkinson were named among 11 student-athletes who will represent Canada at the 2013 Summer Universiade in Kazan, Russia as announced Thursday morning by the CIS and Badminton Canada.

A native of Scarborough, Ont., So has enjoyed great success in her two seasons with the Varsity Blues. The kinesiology major was named the female rookie and player of the year in leading U of T to the OUA silver medal in 2012. She earned her second consecutive OUA all-star nod in helping the Blues to their first OUA championship banner in a decade this past March.
Similarly, Wilkinson (Toronto) was named the 2012 OUA male rookie of the year after claiming the gold medal in mixed doubles with partner Fiona McKee.

The Kazan badminton tournament is scheduled for July 5 to 11. All finals are set for July 11 with the exception of the women's and men's team finals, which will be contested on July 7.

Canada's lone previous appearance in the sport at the world university games dates back to 2007 in Bangkok, Thailand.

About the Summer Universiade
The Summer Universiade is an international multi-sport event that takes place every two years and is second only to the Olympic Games in the number of participating athletes and countries. The Universiade is open to competitors who are at least 17 and less than 28 years of age as of January 1 in the year of the Games. Participants must be full-time students at a post-secondary institution (university, college, CEGEP) or have graduated from a post-secondary institution in the year preceding the event.
