The Varsity Blues women’s squash team fell just short of a medal at the 2013 Jester’s university league playoffs on Saturday, March 23 at Downsview Park.
The Blues, who finished second in league play, faced the 2013 OUA champion Western Mustangs in semi-final action. A spirited performance from the Blues almost edged the perennial powerhouses; however the Mustangs prevailed, 4-3.
Rookie Sarah Teixeira got the Blues rolling with 3-0 win in the No. 7 position. The Blues fell behind 2-1 in matches before No. 4 Alexis Twiddy reversed her OUA defeat against Lauren Mahfood with a 3-1 win. Western won at No. 2 and 3 spots, but Jen Klein played magnificently for a 3-1 victory and her first win of the season in the No. 1 spot.
The Blues went onto face the Waterloo Warriors for the bronze medal. The Warriors had previously defeated the Blues, 6-0, at the OUA championship last month.
Toronto jumped out to a 2-0 lead with Teixeira notching her second win of the day and Kelly Murphy edging Waterloo, 3-2, in the No. 6 spot. The Blues won at the No. 4 position, as Alexis Twiddy overcame a two-game deficit to win 3-2. Waterloo and Toronto were even at 3-3.
Klein was then matched Micaala Seth, the No. 1 Canadian university squash player, to determine the outcome of the match. Despite her best efforts, Seth took the game 3-0.
