The Varsity Blues women’s squash team defeated the host McMaster Marauders, 5-1, on the final day of the 2013 OUA championship, claiming fourth place overall.
With a 1-3 record, the Blues needed to defeat the Marauders by four points to ensure the fourth-place standing. Grace Lui (Waterloo, Ont.) made her OUA debut versus Allie Pittiglio in the No. 6 position, taking the match with an 11-9 win in the fifth game.
Fourth-year veteran Liz Cambridge (Port-of-Spain, Trinidad) also took the No. 5 match to five games, defeating McMaster’s Tara Kajaks 12-10 to earn U of T’s second point.
The No. 3 and 4 matches then took to the court. Toronto’s Diana Wong won her third match of the weekend, downing Chantal Diniz 3-0 in the No. 3 spot. Tied 1-1 in the No. 4 match, Alex Twiddy (Brighton, Ont.) then took two straight games to earn the 3-1 win over Megan Raczkowski.
Sophomore Mable Low (Toronto) was up against OUA rookie of the year Emma Kent in the No. 1 spot. Low won the second game 11-2 with a brilliant sequence of unplayable serves and hard low drives but could not maintain the pressure and went down 3-1.
Everything was left up to team captain Jessica Omand. After dropping the first game, Omand took the next game 12-10, won the third 11-6 and dominated the fourth 11-2 to secure the win and fourth-place standing.
The Blues finished off the podium for the first time since 1999.
“All good runs have to end sometime,” said Varsity Blues head coach Dave Cooper. “It felt good to win the last match of the 2013 championship and look forward to 2014.”
The Varsity Blues return to the court March 1-3 as they host the 2013 Black Knight Canadian University and College championships at the Athletic Centre. Toronto will also be competing in the 2013 Jester’s university championships, March 16-17, at Downsview Park.
