BLUES FALL PREY TO LIONS, TO PLAY FOR OUA BRONZE

The Varsity Blues women’s volleyball team fell 3-0 (25-14, 25-21, 25-20) to the host and top-seeded York Lions in OUA semi-final action on Friday night (Feb. 22) at Tait McKenzie Centre.
 
The loss snaps a seven-game win streak. The Blues will play the Ryerson Rams, who fell 3-0 to the Ottawa Gee-Gees in the other semifinal, in the OUA bronze-medal match tomorrow at 5 p.m.
 
It will be U of T’s second consecutive appearance in the third-place game, after claiming the bronze in 2012.
 
Sophomore standout Denise Wooding led the Blues with six kills and 10 digs on the night. Jennifer Neilson added a team-high 14 digs, while Shannon Rossall notched four blocks in the loss.
 
The Blues got off to a rough start, dropping the first set 25-14. Trailing 9-3 early in the second, U of T began to rally, going on a 6-1 rally to bring the game within one (10-9). The two teams went back-and-forth and the Lions held a 16-12 lead at the technical time out.  
 
Toronto clawed back with a 6-4 run; however, the Lions prevailed, taking a 2-0 lead with a 25-21 second set victory.
 
York got out to an early 7-0 advantage, and despite a great effort to bring the game within four (18-22), the Blues fell 25-20 as York advanced to the championship final.   
 
Brandie Wilkerson led the Lions with a game-high 15 kills and 13 digs. Michelle Pierce added nine kills and three blocks in the win.
