Box Score The Varsity Blues women’s basketball team ended their 2012-13 regular season campaign with a 65-61 loss to the Ryerson Rams on Saturday night (Feb. 16) at Mattamy Athletic Centre.
Toronto’s second loss in as many nights sees them finish third in the OUA East division with a 10-10 record. The Blues will host the sixth-seeded York Lions (6-14) in an East quarter-final this Wednesday, February 20 at the Athletic Centre Sports Gym. Tip off is set for 7 p.m.
Third-year guard Jill Stratton (Etobicoke, Ont.) led the Blues with 17 points, while Montreal native Liane Bailey had 13 points and fellow third-year forward Julie Longauer (Whitby, Ont.) added 10 points on the night. Rachael Sider (New Westminster, B.C.) tallied a team-high nine boards in the loss.
A low-scoring first quarter saw the host Rams go 8-for-10 from the free throw line en route to an 8-7 advantage heading into the second frame.
Ryerson came alive in the second, holding Toronto to just one point in the first six minutes of the quarter. The 15-1 run saw the Rams lead by as many as 15 points, until the Blues went on a 13-2 streak of their own to cut the lead to four (25-21) at halftime.
Ryerson’s Kelsey Wright (Brampton, Ont.) had a game-high 13 points in the first half.
A Vanessa Wallace three-pointer and Amanda Lauzon jumper gave the Blues their first lead since the first quarter; however, Ryerson quickly re-established the lead with a 9-0 streak. The home team held a 44-37 lead heading into the fourth quarter.
Both teams found their offensive flare in the fourth. The Rams held a two-possession lead throughout the majority of the frame until a Bailey three-pointer brought the game within two (60-58) with just under three minutes remaining. Despite the comeback attempt, the Rams held on for the four-point victory.
Wright led all players with 28 points, while C’airah Cabriel Robinson added 10 points and Silvana Jez notched a game-high 10 boards in the win.
