Box Score Third-year left side hitter Rebecca Crosier notched a career-high 14 kills in her final home game to lead the Varsity Blues women’s volleyball team to a 3-0 (25-16, 25-22, 25-13) victory over the RMC Paladins on Sunday afternoon.
A native of Ottawa, Crosier was one of five Varsity Blues honoured in a pre-game graduating player ceremony. Leah Sherriff, Alexandra Hudson, Katrina Rossall and Shannon Rossall were also honoured.
The Blues end their 2012-13 regular season with an 11-7 record in fifth place in the OUA standings. U of T is riding a six-game win streak heading into playoffs and will travel to Kingston, Ont., to take on the fourth-place Queen's Gaels next Saturday, February 16 at 6 p.m.
Crosier added nine digs and three blocks to her game-high 14-kill performance. Hudson (Mississauga, Ont.) tallied six kills, a team-high 13 digs, three blocks and three aces, while Shannon Rossall (Calgary) added six kills and three aces in the victory.
Leading 16-10 at the first technical time out, the Blues went on a dominant 9-6 run, capped off with a Crosier tip over the net, to take the first set 25-16.
The Paladins got out to an early 3-1 lead in the second; however, Toronto came back and again led 16-10 at the break. RMC evened the game at 22-22, but three straight U of T points, including an ace from Crosier, would give the home team a 2-0 advantage.
The Blues got out to a 16-7 lead in the third frame and secured the win with another 9-6 run. Sherriff ended the match and her five-year CIS career with a kill against her former team.
RMC was led by Chelsey Litjens (Ottawa), who recorded nine kills and two aces, while both Danielle Vortisch (Whitby, Ont.) and Mallory Litjens (Ottawa) had seven kills in the loss. The Paladins end their season with a 2-16 record in 13th place in the OUA standings.
