WOMEN’S BASKETBALL PICKS UP THIRD STRAIGHT WIN

Box Score Nine different players scored as the Varsity Blues women’s basketball team defeated the Laurentian Lady Vees 69-54 in a solid team effort on Friday, February 1 at the Athletic Centre Sports Gym.
 
With the win, the Blues sweep the season series with the Lady Vees and remain in third place in the East with an 8-7 record. Laurentian drops to 5-11 on the season.
 
Toronto outrebounded Laurentian 53-34, with the Lady Vees committing 24 turnovers to U of T’s 10.
 
Toronto forward Rachael Sider of New Westminster, B.C., led all players with 18 points, while fellow third-year guard Jill Stratton (Etobicoke, Ont.) added 14 points and four assists on the night.
 
Fourth-year forward Alicia Van Kampen (Amaranth, Ont.) notched eight points and a game-high 12 rebounds, with Amanda Lauzon (Niagara Falls, Ont.) adding 10 boards. Rookie guard Alanna Garner (London, Ont.) tallied a season-high nine points in the win.
 
With the Lady Vees leading 14-6 early in the second quarter, Stratton led a 9-2 U of T run to bring the game within one (16-15) midway through the frame. Vanessa Wallace hit a three to even the score with less than a minute to go, but OUA leading scorer Sasha Polishchuk drained a jumper to give the visiting squad a 27-25 advantage at halftime.
 
The Blues exploded in the third quarter, outscoring the Lady Vees 22-10 to take a seven-point lead (44-37) into the final frame. Toronto continued to dominate and held Laurentian to another 10-point quarter in the victory.
 
Emma Decloe led the Lady Vees with 12 points and seven rebounds, while both Danielle Harris and Erin Simpson added 11 points in the loss.
 
The Varsity Blues return to action tomorrow night as they host the York Lions at the Athletic Centre Sports Gym. Game time is set for 6 p.m.
