Box Score The University of Toronto Varsity Blues women's basketball team dropped their 2013-14 season opener 70-35 to the McMaster Marauders on Friday, November 1 in Hamilton, Ont.
The Blues shot 26% from the floor, compared to McMaster's 40% on the night. Turnovers were a problem as U of T relinquished the ball 24 times and the Marauders notched 27 points on turnovers.
Fourth-year guard Jill Stratton of Etobicoke, Ont., was 6-of-12 for a team-high 15 points, while adding six rebounds, two assists and two steals. Veteran forward Alicia Van Kampen added six points and led the Blues with nine boards in the loss.
McMaster's Hailey Milligan led all players with a double-double of 19 points and 12 rebounds, while Danielle Boiago added 15 points and eight boards. Jackie Nimec had 11 points in the win.
The Blues led 8-7 midway through the first quarter; however, McMaster went on a 10-0 run to gain a 17-8 advantage after the first 10 minutes of action.
McMaster added to their lead, outscoring Toronto 18-11 in the second quarter to take a 35-19 lead into halftime.
The second half saw much of the same as the Marauders came away with two points.
The Blues look to bounce back tomorrow night as they travel to St. Catharines, Ont., to take on the Brock Badgers. Toronto returns home next Friday, November 8 as they host the Laurier Golden Hawks in their 2013 home opener. Game time on both nights is 6 p.m.
