Box Score Rachael Sider’s 21 points led the Varsity Blues women’s basketball team to a 62-57 win over the Queen’s Gaels on Saturday, January 5 at the ARC Main Gym in Kingston, Ont.
U of T’s first win of 2013 lifts them into third place in the East division with a 5-4 record.
A native of New Westminster, B.C., Sider went 5-for-11 from the field and hit 10-of-12 free throws for the career-high 21 points. 14 of those points came in the second half.
Fourth-year guard Jasmine Lewin (Brampton, Ont.) added 11 points, while Amanda Lauzon added a team-high seven boards in the win.
After a back-and-forth start, the Blues surged ahead early in the second quarter and built a 16-point lead (30-16) midway through the frame. The Gaels battled back to bring the game within 10 (37-27) at halftime.
A low scoring third frame saw Toronto outscore Queen’s 8-7. That set up an exciting fourth quarter, highlighted by three straight three’s from Gaels star Liz Boag. Despite the solid individual effort, Sider’s free throw shooting allowed U of T to hold on for the six-point win.
Boag led the home team with 16 points, while Robyn Person had 10 points and eight rebounds in the loss.
The Varsity Blues return home this Friday, January 11 as they host the No. 5 Carleton Ravens at the Athletic Centre Sports Gym. Tip off is set for 6 p.m.
