BLUES DOWN GRYPHONS FOR SEVENTH STRAIGHT WIN

The Varsity Blues field hockey team defeated their rivals Guelph Gryphons 3-1 on Sunday, September 30 in Guelph, Ont.

With the win, the Blues improve to a perfect 7-0 and remain atop the OUA standings, while the Gryphons drop to 5-1-1 and sit in second place.

OUA leading scorer Brittany Seidler opened the scoring for the home team in the fourth minute of the match; however, third-year forward Ally Evanyshyn evened the score just a minute later.  Veteran midfielder would notch the eventual game-winner in the 22nd minute ad the Blues held a 2-1 lead at the half.

Rookie forward Emma Stairs added her sixth goal of the season in the 55th minute to round out the scoring.

“The girls played with a sense of urgency today, knowing that this game would be key in the standings,” said Varsity Blues head coach John DeSouza. “We played as a team, making connections throughout the field.”

Veteran defenders Kelley Lusk and Kaelan Watson kept Seidler at bay for the entire match, while midfielder Amanda Woodcroft controlled Toronto’s transition game well.

The Varsity Blues return to the field on Saturday, October 13 as they take on the McGill Martlets at Downsview Park. Game time is set for 2:15 p.m.
