BLUES FALL PREY TO LIONS

The Varsity Blues women’s rugby team lost their third straight match, falling 23-12 to the second-place York Lions on Saturday, September 29 at Varsity Centre.

The Blues defence struggled to contain the Lions early in the first half. York scored on a penalty kick and followed up with a try in the first 25 minutes of action.

Later in the first half, the Blues offence was able to score on tries by Karla Telidetzki (Edmonton, Alta.) in the 29th minute and Emily Mitchell (Fenelon Falls, Ont.) in the 38th, helping the home team narrow York’s lead. However, another penalty kick and a try by Amber Barrett (Kitchener, Ont.), gave the Lions an 18-12 lead at halftime.

York was able to extend their lead on Barrett’s second try of the game, the only scoring in the second half, in the 52nd minute.

Toronto’s loss keeps the team in fifth place in the OUA Russell division while York’s (3-2) win moves the team one game above .500.

The Varsity Blues return to action on Friday, October 5 as they travel to take on the McMaster Marauders. Game time is set for 1 pm.
