BLUES SHUT DOWN GAELS

Six different players scored as the Varsity Blues field hockey team defeated the Queen’s Gaels 7-0 on Saturday, September 16 in Waterloo, Ont.
 
Third-year forward Alex Thicke (North Vancouver, B.C.) led the Blues with two goals in their second consecutive win on opening weeking.
 
Rookie forward Emma Stairs of Kitchener, Ont., opened the scoring in the 12th minute, with Thicke notching her first off a corner just two minutes later.  2011 CIS rookie of the year Amanda Woodcroft (Waterloo, Ont.) extended U of T’s lead to three in the 32nd minute. Toronto held the 3-0 advantage at halftime.
 
Tegan Stairs (Kitchener) tallied her second goal of the season in the 36th minute, before Thicke added her second of the game on a penalty stroke one minute later. Burlington, Ont., native Ally Evanyshyn and Justine Branco (Mississauga) each scored on corners to round out Toronto’s scoring.
 
The Varsity Blues return to action next Saturday, September 22 as they host the Western Mustangs and York Lions at Varsity Centre.
