BADGERS BETTER BLUES HEADING INTO HOLIDAY BREAK

Box Score The Varsity Blues women’s basketball team dropped their  fourth straight game to the Brock Badgers, 68-54, on Saturday night (Dec. 1) at the Athletic Centre Sports Gym.

With the loss, the Blues head into the December break 4-4 and in third place in the OUA East division. The Badgers remain a perfect 7-0 in the West. Toronto’s last win over Brock came on Nov. 20, 2004.

Fourth-year guard Jasmine Lewin and third-year forward Julie Longauer hit double digits on the night. Longauer (Whitby, Ont.) recorded a career-high 17 points, while Lewin (Brampton, Ont.) had a double-double of 14 points and 10 boards en route to player of the game honours.

Second-year Badgers guard Kayla Santilli of Brantford, Ont., opened the game with 11 points in the first six minutes, helping Brock build a dominant 16-4 lead in the early goings. The Blues ended the first frame on a 7-0 run to cut the gap to five (16-11) after 10 minutes.

Brock started the second stanza with an 11-3 streak, thanks in large part to Nicole Rosenkranz (Niagara Falls, Ont.) and went into halftime with a 35-21 advantage.

The Badgers outscored the Blues 23-12 in the third quarter, extending their lead to 25 (58-33) heading into the final frame. U of T had their best frame in the fourth, but it wasn’t enough in the lopsided loss.

Santilli notched a game-high 19 points, while Rosenkranz tallied 17 points and nine rebounds. Samantha Dejong (St. Catharines, Ont.) added a double-double of 10 points and 11 boards in the win.

The Varsity Blues return to the court in the new year when they travel to Kingston, Ont., on Saturday, January 5 to take on the Queen’s Gaels. Tip off is scheduled for 1 p.m.
