BLUES COMEBACK DERAILED BY MCMASTER

Box Score The Varsity Blues women’s basketball team dropped their third straight contest losing 64-56 to the visiting McMaster Marauders on Friday night (Nov. 30) at the Athletic Centre Sports Gym.
 
Toronto (4-3) dropped to second place in the East with loss while McMaster (2-4) picked up their second win on the season.
 
Julie Longauer (Whitby, Ont.) led the way for the Varsity Blues notching 13 points and three rebounds.
 
The Marauders jumped out to an early lead and established a seven-point advantage thanks to a full-court press in the first frame. The Blues’ chipped away though with a 12-8 run and ended the first quarter down just three, 21-18.
 
Momentum swayed back in McMaster’s favour as they stifled the Blues on defence, outscoring the home team by 11 in the second quarter to build a 34-20 halftime lead.
 
Both teams traded runs and alternated full-court presses, forcing 14 combined turnovers to end the third with McMaster leading the Toronto 53-38.

A 10-0 run by the Blues late in the fourth quarter was capped off by a Vanessa Wallace (Ottawa, Ont.) three-pointer to pull Toronto within four points with just over a minute and a half to go. Both teams would trade missed opportunities on the next four possessions before Danielle Boiago (Hamilton, Ont.) iced the game with two free throws.
 
Boiago led the Marauders with game-high 20 points, while Hailey Milligan (Brantford, Ont.) knocked down 14 points of her own in the win.
 
The Varsity Blues return to the court tomorrow as they host the Brock Badgers (6-0). Game time is scheduled for 6 p.m.
