BLUES TOP THUNDERWOLVES FOR SECOND STRAIGHT WIN

Box Score The Varsity Blues women’s basketball team notched a 63-53 victory over the Lakehead Thunderwolves on Saturday night (Nov. 10) at the Athletic Centre Sports Gym.

A 25-point third quarter would be the difference as the Blues open the season at 2-0. Lakehead drops to 1-1 after the first week of OUA basketball action.

Fourth-year guard Jasmine Lewin of Brampton, Ont., led all players with 17 points, while adding three assists and two steals. Third-year guard Rachel Sider (New Westminster, B.C.) had nine points and six boards, while Amanda Lauzon led the team for the second straight night with eight rebounds in the win.

Lakehead opened the game on a 5-1 run; however, six straight points from third-year forward Julie Longauer would even the score at nine apiece late in the frame. The Thunderwolves carried a one-point advantage (11-10) into the second quarter.

Both teams exchanged baskets as the game remained close throughout the majority of the second. Lakehead would turn up the tempo and closed out the half with a 10-2 run to take a 30-24 lead at halftime.

The Blues responded to bring the score back within one and the back-and-forth battle ensued.  The two squads traded the lead through the latter half of the third quarter and a late Lewin lay up would give the Blues a 49-47 edge heading into the final frame.

U of T maintained the lead for the entire fourth quarter and a Lewin jumper with 1:49 gave the home squad a comfortable lead that would not diminish.

Carolyn Fragale and Kelsey Bardsley led the Thunderwolves with 11 and 12 points, respectively.  Jessica De Haan recorded a game-high 12 boards in the loss.

The Varsity Blues return to action next Friday, November 16 as they head to Waterloo, Ont., to take on the Laurier Golden Hawks. Tip off is scheduled for 6 p.m.
