BLUES DROP NARROW DECISION TO GAELS

The Varsity Blues men’s soccer team suffered a disappointing 2-1 loss to the Queen’s Gaels on Saturday, October 6 at West Campus Field.

With the loss, the Blues are in sixth place overall holding a 4-5-0 record, while the Gaels move closer to first place with an 8-2-2 record in the OUA East Division.

For most parts of the game, defence was the predominant theme as both teams were tied at 0-0 deadlock for the entire first half, and most of the second.  Luckily for the Blues, Kilian Elkinson (Toronto) was able to break the deadlock with a great goal in the 64th minute of the game.

With the lead of 1-0 late in the second half, it seemed like the Blues would be able to win the game through their defensive efforts alone. However, the Gaels rallied as Toronto native Henry Bloeman tied the game in the 71st minute.

Tied 1-1 near the end of regulation, the Gaels would strike once again as Kingston, Ont., native Lucas Azeredo Lobo was able to sneak in a goal at the 90th minute, giving Queen’s the victory.

Despite coming on a losing effort, many members of the Blues turned in impressive performances. The team as a whole was able to put up five shots in the game. First year goalkeeper Rab Bruce-Lockhart (Victoria) was able to put up an impressive six saves and keep his team in the game.

The Varsity Blues return to action this Sunday, September 7 when they take on the RMC Paladins at Inner Field. Game time is scheduled for 3 p.m.
